About Our Gemstones

The main difference is where they come from, but scientifically, "lab-grown" and "synthetic" mean the same thing.

  • Natural Stones: Created by nature deep within the earth over millions of years and retrieved through mining. They are highly valuable due to their rarity and unique natural imperfections.
  • Lab-Grown / Lab-Created Stones: Real, genuine gemstones grown by scientists in a controlled laboratory setting. They take weeks or months to form instead of millions of years.
  • Synthetic Stones: This is simply the official scientific and gemological term for a lab-grown stone. It confirms the gem is a "man-made synthesis" that perfectly copies nature's chemical recipe.
  • Do not confuse synthetic/lab-grown stones with simulants (imitations).
    A     simulants are a different, cheaper material (like colored glass, cubic zirconia, or synthetic spinel) that simply looks like a real gemstone.

    The Bottom Line: A lab-grown (synthetic) diamond, ruby, sapphire or sapphire is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a natural one. It is not "fake" jewelry—it just has a different origin story and a much lower price tag.

Moissanite is not a diamond. It is a completely distinct, genuine gemstone with its own unique fire, brilliance, and physical properties. While it looks very similar to a diamond, here is what makes moissanite special:

  • Incredible Sparkle: Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond. This means it bends light more and flashes more colorful, rainbow-like sparkles (known as "fire").
  • Extreme Durability: It scores a 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is the second-hardest gemstone on earth, right behind diamond (which scores a 10), making it perfect for everyday wear.
  • Ethical and Lab-Grown: Natural moissanite is incredibly rare and arrives on earth via meteorites. Because of this, all moissanite used in jewelry today is sustainably grown in labs.

Gemstone Care & Handling

Most gemstones can be safely cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. However, cleaning methods vary by stone type:

  • Diamonds, Sapphires, Rubies, Moissanite: Safe with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners for stones with fractures.
  • Emeralds: Use only lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning, as emeralds are often treated with oils.
  • Opals: Use only lukewarm water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or harsh chemicals. Pat dry immediately.

Always dry your gemstones with a soft, lint-free cloth after cleaning.

The Mohs hardness scale (1–10) measures a gemstone's resistance to scratching. Here are the ratings for our gemstones:

  • Diamond: 10 (hardest; suitable for daily wear)
  • Moissanite: 9.25 (extremely durable; excellent for daily wear)
  • Sapphire & Ruby: 9 (very durable; excellent for daily wear)
  • Emerald: 7.5–8 (moderate hardness; best for occasional wear or protected settings)
  • Opal: 5.5–6.5 (softer; best for pendants, earrings, or rings with protective bezels; avoid daily wear)

Softer stones require more careful handling and should be stored separately to avoid scratches.

Proper storage protects your gemstones from damage:

  • General Storage: Keep gemstones in a soft pouch or padded jewelry box, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature changes.
  • Separate Storage: Store softer stones (emeralds, opals) separately from harder stones to prevent scratching.
  • Opal Care: Opals are sensitive to moisture loss and temperature fluctuations. Store in a cool, humid environment (ideally 45–55% humidity). Avoid dry environments and direct heat. Never store opals in airtight containers without moisture control, as they can crack.
  • Avoid Chemicals: Keep all gemstones away from perfumes, lotions, cleaning products, and harsh chemicals.
  • Insurance: For valuable pieces, consider storing in a safe deposit box or home safe.
